Step 1: Measure Glass Only
Lay your tape measure completely flat directly against the glass surface. Do not include the plastic, vinyl, metal, or wooden frame sections in this measurement—we only need the precise dimensions of the visible glass pane itself.
Step 2: Find the Width
Stretch your tape measure horizontally across the window. Measure from the exact point where the glass meets the inner frame molding on the left, straight over to where it meets the inner frame molding on the right side.
Step 3: Find the Height
Stretch your tape measure vertically. Measure from the exact point where the glass meets the top frame edge or rubber glazing bead, straight down to where it meets the bottom frame edge or sill molding.
Step 4: Note Individual Panes
If you have double-hung windows (windows with an upper sash and lower sash), make sure to measure the upper and lower glass sections completely separately. Note down the width and height for each individual pane.
